Also known as La Bormliża, għana fil-għoli takes its name from the city of Bormla, where it was once popular. This distinctive style of Maltese għana is characterized by its high-pitched, soaring vocal lines, demanding vocal control. While other types of għana - such as Spirtu Pront and tal-Fatt- focus on verbal dexterity and storytelling, għana fil-għoli prioritizes melodic beauty and vocal expression.
The singer’s voice weaves intricate melodic contours over the steady pulse of the guitar accompaniment, with prolonged melisma drawing the listener into the sound itself. Rather than focusing on the meaning of the words, the audience is invited to experience their emotion, texture, and musicality.
Mikiel Cumbo, affectionately known as ‘l-Iżgej’, is widely regarded as Malta’s leading folk singer in the rare high-pitched style of għana fil-għoli, also known as La Bormliża. His interest in għana began at just seven years old, and by the age of twelve, he had already embraced the demanding Bormliża style. He was tutored under the guidance of Grezzju Ellul ‘ta' Ċanċa’ at Ġolin Axisa ‘ta' Kostanza’'s wine bar, a renowned hub for folk singing.
In recent years, Mikiel has dedicated himself to teaching and inspiring the next generation of singers, encouraging young talents to take on this challenging vocal tradition. Among them is the prominent Mariele Zammit, whom he has personally mentored, ensuring that the legacy of għana fil-għoli continues to thrive.
